Mr. Pharmacy Bobblehead

Human Figure
The Portrait Sculpture is the most difficult of all of the Bobbleheads. The face muscles can move in over 800 different ways and each will alter the expression of the subject. A distinct disadvantage is the studio work is being done without the benefit of actually meeting the individual. Photos and verbal descriptions are used to develop the "LOOK" and expression of the subject.

The process is very subjective and careful attention must be paid to the intent and message the piece will convey. In the example of Mr. Pharmacy the piece was to be given away at the University of Cincinnati at his formal retirement dinner. His daughter was assigned as the project lead and the characterization process was initiated with the concept drawing.

Characterization
To start, a likeness drawing is done to establish the overall feel of the subject. At this point changes are fast and the information exchange is extremely important. Often, the material is provided in a JPEG, GIF or TIFF. Or standard photographs, negatives or positives.

In working with Ad Agencies, tear sheets or drawings are sent in for the background studies. There is no one way and each project has a unique identity. A few times everything was worked out over the phone or email without graphics support.

Bottom Line: The Bobblehead's main function is to be fun!
When dealing with an Individual portrait the sculpture takes on an additional role of Keepsake and personality. When creating the piece a good question to ask is, "How will it be viewed in 100 years?"

While the main purpose for this piece was the retirement dinner and a hearty laugh by all. The reality is that in some small way the piece pays tribute to a much loved Professor that will be remembered with admiration and respect for a long and fruitful career.

When the people, who's lives he has touched, see this little guy, he will trigger a smile of fond remembrance and a job well done and "Hey, pick up the phone and let's do lunch!"
